Ohio Street Road Depression Update

A few weeks ago, a depression appeared in the roadway on Ohio Street between River Drive and Ned Love Avenue.  The City's Public Works Department responded quickly by filling and compacting the depression and closing the road to protect the public.

To better understand what caused the depression and whether there are any other concerns beneath the road, the City hired Geo-Tech, Inc., a professional engineering firm based in Ocala, to conduct a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey. GPR uses radar signals to analyze subsurface features and anomalies.

The survey was completed on April 22, 2026, and covered an area roughly 50 feet in each direction from the depression. Geo-Tech's equipment was able to scan down to about 32 feet below the road surface. The survey identified one area of concern beneath the roadway, in addition to the backfilled depression itself.

Based on their findings, Geo-Tech is recommending that the City proceed with soil borings at two specific locations to collect soil samples and get a clearer picture of underground conditions. This next step will help determine what, if any, remediation measures are needed.

The City is committed to keeping our roads safe and will share further updates as information becomes available.

Responsibilities

The Roads and Streets Department is responsible for the maintenance and signage of all roads, sidewalks, and right-of-ways within the City limits. They are also responsible for notifying Marion County and State of Florida transportation departments for county or state maintained roads.   Roads and Streets review sites for permits which affect City roads, including driveways, traffic signals, and landscaping.  They perform irrigation and mowing of all City properties, facilities maintenance, and addressing related problem reports.

Maintenance

If you would like to request road or street work, please notify us by using our Report A Concern page. You will be able to follow the status of your request until we resolve your problem.

City Council recently executed an Agreement with Rock and Roll Pavers, Inc. to have Dunnellon Heights graded bi-annually.  Moving forward this is expected to be completed sometime in November and again in May. Further questions or concerns should be directed to Dunnellon Public Works at 352-465-8590.
