School Zone Safety Program
The School Zone Safety Program has been implemented to enhance student safety and promote responsible driving near local schools. Utilizing the RedSpeed Camera System, this initiative aims to reduce speeding and increase driver awareness in designated school zones.
Key Features of the Program:
- High-resolution cameras equipped with LiDar technology have been installed near Dunnellon Middle School and Dunnellon Christian Academy. These cameras monitor vehicle speeds and automatically capture images of those exceeding the posted school zone speed limit.
- Signs are posted notifying drivers they are entering a school zone where traffic speeds are photo enforced.
- The speed zone cameras are activated 30 minutes prior to the start of school and remain active throughout the school day. They are deactivated 30 minutes after school lets out. They are not active outside of school hours on weekends, holidays, or summer break.
- When a driver exceeds the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour, a $100 civil violation is issued to the registered vehicle owner. This citation does not add points to a driver’s license or impact their insurance. Payments can be made online, by phone, or through the mail.
- Drivers may dispute the violation by requesting a hearing. If the registered owner was not the driver, they can submit an affidavit identifying the responsible party. If no action is taken, the case is transferred to the county court system.
Community Impact and Driver Responsibility:
The presence of cameras encourages drivers to slow down, helping protect students during their daily commutes. It also allows local law enforcement to focus on other priorities while maintaining safety within school zones.
All drivers are reminded to be especially alert in school zones. Reducing speed, eliminating distractions like cell phones, and watching for children and pedestrians are essential steps in keeping our community safe.
Conclusion:
The Dunnellon School Zone Safety Program is a proactive step toward protecting students and promoting safer driving habits. By combining modern technology with community awareness, the City aims to create a safer environment around schools — reminding all drivers that safety should always come first.
